新年快乐, 恭喜发财

新年快乐, 恭喜发财!!!
HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEARS!!!

Just here to wish you all a Happy Chinese New Years! (Cue "恭喜, 恭喜, 恭喜你" song.) It's a new year, so out with the old! Don't hold onto grudges (they'll eat you alive and you'll turn into Ju-On), try something new, do things you want to do without others holding you back, be independent!

Well anyways, yesterday was Chinese New Years Eve! My family and I always celebrate on CNYE. Somewhat of a big thing for us. My mom works hard to clean the house and prepare a large dinner for all of us. ♥ And I must admit that CNYE is the MOST liveliest day of the new year for my family.

I actually ended up having 2 dinners. One with my mom's side of the family and one with my dad's side of the family. The first dinner was with my mom's side of the family. And because my mom's side is from Northern China, we are most famous for our 水饺. My grandma makes the best damn pot stickers and dumplings! (I remember I asked my mom how to cook the pot stickers and it took a while for me to get it. I still don't think I cook it well. Cooking the dumplings is an art as well as making them.)

Every CNYE, we have this dumpling tradition, my mom and grandma wrap the red dates into selected dumplings and cooks them. And whoever eats the red dates gets a 红包. First person to get the red date dumpling gets a larger amount in the 红包 than the rest. This year, my mom wrapped 5 red dates into the dumplings. Mom totally rigged it because she was the one who wrapped the dumpling and put money into the 红包. AND WHAT?! SHE GOT THE FIRST RED DATE DUMPLING! Daddy got the second one and I got the third one. My 红包 only got $2! We have no idea what happened to the 4th and 5th red date dumplings, maybe grandpa and uncle ate them and didn't know. (Reminds me of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!!!)

I ate a whole bunch of dumplings last night and I was damn full! Not too long after I had to eat another dinner with my dad's side of the family. Big tummy full of 水饺 still hadn't digested so I was basically screwed... CNYE with my dad's side is a really big deal. We bust out the candles and incense and set up the table for our ancestors and 拜神. After we're done 拜神-ing, the eating commences! I ate a heaping bowl of rice, black fungus, fish, and peanuts. So full at this moment @___@' After we eat our rice we have to drink soup. I swear I almost fell asleep at the dinner table from my food coma. Grandma and auntie started passing out the 红包 to everyone after we ate. I watched some Chinese television while eating the 黑瓜子. Another tradition is to watch the big CNYE show in Beijing on TV. I took a shower and washed my hair since we're not allowed to wash our hair in fear of washing our luck away. In Chinese, hair = tou fa, fa=luck. And then I fell asleep. I slept until 12:30pm today... maybe it was the food coma.

What did you guys do on Chinese New Years Eve? What are you guys' traditions for Chinese New Years Eve?

Have a great Chinese New Years everyone! ♥

恭喜, 恭喜, 恭喜你
